May 2006 - International Family Fun '...all the members of the body, though many, are one body..." 1 Cor.12:12
An International ParishThe parish of St Nicholas of Tolentino in Bristol has more than 50 nationalities represented in the congregation. Parish priest Fr Richard McKay acknowledges that such diversity can make inculteration tricky. "So what we do here is that each Sunday we sing at Mass one song in Malayalam (Kerala S India), a couple in African languages (various) as well as English (and Latin Taize chant). We also sometimes read in different languages especially on special feasts. Also, perhaps 4 times a year, we have a multicultural parish lunch and sing and dance in different languages (including Portuguese & Tutan (East Timor), Urdu (Pakistan) and share stories from Africa & the Caribbean. We look to ensure everything we do reflects the ethnic diversity - different ministries, readers, lay ministers of the Eucharist, Parish Pastoral Council etc. Song, dance, story and food are very important cultural expressions, as well as national dress - all these things we emphasise and embrace occasions to celebrate in this way."
