Family Fun Day:
Celebrating National Family Week in Hallam
Home

A Family Fun Day shared by the parishes of Sacred Heart Goldthorpe, St Michael’s Wombwell and St Helen’s Hoyland took place on May 16th to kick start National Family Week (Monday May 25th to Sunday May 31st). Organised by Laura Rendell, Parent Support Worker in the Diocese and Sr Beate, Corpus Christi Parish Sister, the event attracted nearly fifty people from 15 families. "Someone asked how many children there were and was told “All of them”, said Laura. "It was true, at times it was hard to tell the children from the adults, as they were all so involved in having fun together."

Laura's Report:

The Fun Day offered a range of playful activities for all the families from the three churches to enjoy. They joined in games such as: football, tennis, board games, clay modelling, card making, other arts and crafts, Lego building, glass paints, and face painting. One particular game enjoyed by young and old was the Parachute. This is a large rainbow coloured circular sheet, made from the same material as parachutes.

The day was planned to bring families together, to “Celebrate Family”, and enjoy each other’s company, to laugh, play and share food together. Everyone was asked to bring food for a shared table. This arrived in abundance and was enjoyed by all.

It was obvious people were having a good time: Phoebe (age 10) said to her mother: “Mum is this on every month? I want to come again.” Three year old Ben's mother was worried her son would not make it through the afternoon as he was so tired and not had his nap. Not only did Ben manage to make it through the day, he never stopped smiling. So many adults said how much they had enjoyed the day, and how much fun they had.

The day ended with Mass. Children participated with Offertory readings, Bidding Prayers and a liturgical dance. The children had had less than thirty minutes to learn this but performed beautifully.

Another Family Fun Day is planned for next year.
